Tabla

The tabla, is probably the most popular Indian percussion instrument used in classical, popular and religious Hindustani music.

The tabla consists of 2 drums.

  1. The smaller drum, played with the right hand, is called 'dayan' (meaning right).

  2. The dayan can be made from wood eg. neem or shesham (rose wood).

  3. Another name for 'dayan' is 'tabla'.

  4. The larger drum, played with the left hand, is called 'baya' (meaning left).

  5. The bayan can be made from metal eg. brass, copper, aluminium or from terracota or ceramic.

  6. Another name for 'bayan' is 'duggi'.

  7. The bigger the diameter of each drum, the lower the pitch and vice versa.

  8. The playing technique for both drums involves extensive use of the fingers and palm movement. This produces different sounds.

  9. The dayan can produce 12 different sounds.

  10. The bayan can produce 2 different sounds, but applying pressure to the bayan changes the pitch.

  11. Both drum shells are covered with a skin, constructed from goat.

  12. Tuning is done by hitting the 'guli' or ghittak (pegs).

  13. Fine tuning can be done by hitting the braided portion of the head ('pagri') using a metal hammer.

  14. For stability while playing, each drum is positioned on a ring called 'bida' or' chutta'.
